TikTok owner ByteDance confirms plans to produce a smartphone

يوليو 29, 2019 0

TikTok owner ByteDance has confirmed previous reports that it plans to produce a smartphone after making a deal with Smartisan earlier this year in which it acquired a number of its patents and employees. In comments given to Reuters, a spokesperson from the company described the phone as “a continuation of earlier Smartisan plans, aiming to satisfy the needs of the old Smartisan user base.”
It’s not exactly surprising that ByteDance is considering entering another product category, especially since it has already expanded into messaging and is reportedly thinking about launching a music streaming service. Previous reports suggested that both of these apps would come preinstalled on ByteDance’s phone alongside TikTok, the app behind the company’s explosive growth.
Previous attempts by mainly service-based companies to move into hardware haven’t gone especially well. Facebook never made a follow-up to the phone it produced in collaboration with HTC, and the less that’s said about the Amazon Fire Phone, the better. There’s also the continued question about the role of Chinese companies in producing smartphones for a global audience, as well as the difficulties experienced by TikTok in its international expansion. Still, ByteDance’s seemingly overnight international success with TikTok means we wouldn’t put it past the company to find a way to make its phone work.

Huawei was working on a Google Assistant smart speaker before Trump ban

يوليو 29, 2019 0

Huawei was planning to follow other tech giants in releasing a smart speaker, according toThe Information, but then the US government threw the company’s software partnership with Google into disarray. Like Google’s own Home speakers, Huawei’s was to be powered by the Google Assistant and respond to customer voice commands. The plan was to announce the Huawei-branded speaker at this year’s IFA conference in Berlin and sell it globally, with Huawei selling it on the web to US shoppers.
But when US president Donald Trump imposed trade restrictions against Huawei in May, the speaker collaboration with Google quickly dissolved.
Manufacturers of these smart speakers, including Amazon, Apple, Google, and others, are increasingly being taken to task over the sensitive conversations and data their voice assistants can collect. Reports over the last several months have made clear how often our exchanges with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri are reviewed by human employees in an effort to improve accuracy and provide better responses.
Huawei releasing a consumer speaker would have only ratcheted up those concerns and amplified the possibility of the Chinese government using Huawei’s devices for surveillance purposes. A smartphone ultimately holds far more information about you — and Huawei already makes plenty of excellent phones — but we’re in a moment where the always-listening nature of smart speakers has struck a nerve with consumers who are wary of Big Tech and the potential for total strangers listening to their home conversations.
The Information says that the shelved speaker “shows that [Google and Huawei] were even closer than previously understood,” but that point is up for debate. Huawei has steadfastly churned out devices running Google software over the last several years and dating back to the Nexus days, from phones to Wear OS smartwatches; these two companies were always close before US suspicions about Huawei suddenly divorced them and forced Huawei into using the open-source version of Android, which lacks the Google apps and services that many people outside China consider critical.

Apple’s hired contractors are listening to your recorded Siri conversations, too

يوليو 28, 2019 0

Apple is paying contractors to listen to recorded Siri conversations, according to a new report from The Guardian, with a former contractor revealing that workers have heard accidental recordings of users’ personal lives, including doctor’s appointments, addresses, and even possible drug deals.
According to that contractor, Siri interactions are sent to workers, who listen to the recording and are asked to grade it for a variety of factors, like whether the request was intentional or a false positive that accidentally triggered Siri, or if the response was helpful.
But Apple doesn’t really explicitly say that it has other humans listening to the recordings, and whatever admissions it does make to that end are likely buried deep in a privacy policy that few (if any) Siri users have ever read. Apple does note on its privacy page that “To help them recognize your pronunciation and provide better responses, certain information such as your name, contacts, music you listen to, and searches is sent to Apple servers using encrypted protocols,” but nowhere does it mention that human workers will be listening to and analyzing that data.

In a statement to The Guardian, the company acknowledged that “A small portion of Siri requests are analyzed to improve Siri and dictation. User requests are not associated with the user’s Apple ID. Siri responses are analyzed in secure facilities and all reviewers are under the obligation to adhere to Apple’s strict confidentiality requirements.” Apple also noted that less than 1 percent of daily activations are analyzed under this system.
The fact that humans are listening to voice assistant recordings in general isn’t exactly news — both Amazon (for Alexa) and Google (for Assistant) have been revealed to have similar systems where actual human workers listen to recorded conversations to better improve those systems. It makes sense: smart assistants obviously can’t tell the difference between false positives and actual queries (if they could, it wouldn’t be a false positive), and anyone who’s used a smart assistant can tell you that false positives are still very, very common at this stage of their evolution.
But for all three of these companies, it wasn’t clear up until recently the extent to which these companies were listening in on customers.
Apple’s system may also be more concerning for a few reasons, like the pervasiveness of Apple products. Where Alexa is largely limited to smart speakers, and Google Assistant to speakers and phones, Siri is also on Apple’s hugely popular Apple Watch, which is on millions of people’s wrists every waking moment. Plus, Siri on an Apple Watch activates any time a user raises their wrist, not just when it thinks it’s heard the “Hey, Siri” wake word phrase.

Elon Musk says that Teslas will soon be able to stream Netflix and YouTube

يوليو 28, 2019 0

Elon Musk has long touted the potential that the in-car displays found in Teslas have for drivers: they can not only provide information, but entertainment as well. To that end, he says that the cars will soon be able to stream video from Netflix and YouTube.
Tesla has already unveiled games that drivers can play on the displays: in June, Bethesda studios announced at E3 that drivers would be able to play Fallout Shelter. Tesla has also released Cuphead and some classic Atari games, like Tempest, Pole Position, and Missile Command. On Friday, the company revealed that drivers would be able to play chess in the Tesla Arcade.
The games only work while the car is parked, and players can use the steering wheel as a controller. The same is the case here, although Musk notes that when regulators approve self-driving, Tesla will allow passengers to stream video while the car is in motion. Musk didn’t unveil a timeline for the feature to roll out.
The desire to allow drivers and passengers to watch video isn’t a total surprise — Musk noted at E3 that the ability to watch YouTube was coming. Up until this point, the display doesn’t support HTML5, so such a feature isn’t possible in the cars right now, although one owner found a way around that.
The ability to catch up on your Netflix queue or to play a video game in the car holds some appeal for anyone who’s been stuck waiting in a car for a kid’s practice or stuck on a long car ride with them. (There’s a reason why some minivans come with TV screens.) And when cars can eventually drive themselves, passengers will want something to do while riding to their destination.
But there are huge concerns that would come with any such feature. Test vehicles are required to have a driver behind the wheel to take over in case something goes wrong, and even as self-driving technology improves, it’s hard to imagine that going away completely. There’s also been one high-profile incident in which TV was a problem: a fatal crash in 2017 between an Uber self-driving vehicle and a pedestrian, in which the car’s test driver was watching The Voice on Hulu.

Apple restores banned parental control app OurPact to the App Store

يوليو 13, 2019 0

Apple has reversed course on its ban of parental control app OurPact, allowing the ousted software to return to the App Store in its original form and without any limitations or restrictions. The move marks an end to a months-long dispute between Apple and a variety of parental control companies affected by Apple’s restrictions.
The fact that Apple removed or prevented updates to many of these apps (including OurPact) raised eyebrows because it allegedly stemmed from a sudden change in policy that reclassified the apps as unsafe, due to the technology they relied on for managing kids’ devices. The issue was that these apps were using a suite of tools called MDM, or multi-device management, designed for management of hardware in IT and school environments. It was still allowed on the App Store in a variety of enterprise-level apps after Apple’s rule change, despite using the exact same technology and seemingly putting their users at the same purported risk.
Things came to a head right before Apple’s annual WWDC developer gathering, following a story in The New York Times that put a spotlight on the affected parental control app developers. The report noted how Apple’s bans seemed to coincide with its own rollout of the built-in Screen Time parental control tool in iOS 12, suggesting Apple’s motives involved self-interest.
In response, Apple took the unusual step of publishing a letter from Phil Schiller, its longtime worldwide marketing chief, explaining that the apps “put users’ privacy and security at risk,” and therefore had to be removed. A group of parental control app developers (including OurPact) then banded together to demand an API from Apple for their apps to function within iOS’s new limits, if they were to be permanently prevented from using the existing MDM tools.

Mini revival of the TurboGrafx-16 comes out March 2020 with 50 games

يوليو 13, 2019 0
The TurboGrafx-16 Mini, a retro revival of the classic Japanese game console announced last month, is slated to release on March 19th, 2020, Konami announced today. The full game list is also out, and it includes 50 titles. We’re still waiting on price, but it’s likely to cost somewhere in the ballpark of the Sega Genesis Mini and other retro consoles.
What’s particularly notable in this bit of news is that we know now the console will have the same mix of English and Japanese titles on the Europe, Japan, and American versions of the mini console, so owners will get to play the rare Hideo Kojima title Snatchers in its original form. Another oddity in the lineup is both English and Japanese versions of the classic RPG Ys I & II.
The console was originally developed in partnership with NEC Home Electronics and Hudson Soft and released in 1987. At the time, Konami was one of the few prominent game developers to help the TurboGrafx-16, known as the PC Engine in Japan, stay competitive with and even briefly overtake Nintendo and Sega in the home console market. So it makes sense the company would aim to revive it now at the height of the retro console craze, considering many of its early best-
sellers were released exclusively for the device.

Image: Konami

Unfortunately, time was unkind to the TurboGrafx-16, and it’s now mostly remembered as an also-ran in the early Japanese console wars of the late ‘80s. Still, it is home to some rare gems in classic gaming, and now you can get your hands on 50 of those titles, with 24 English ones for the TurboGrafx-16 and 26 Japanese titles for the PC Engine included on the same device.
The console comes with your standard quick save feature, so you don’t have to play every title in just one sitting. Konami is also including five-player multiplayer with a multitap accessory sold separately, reminiscent of the 1989 TurboTab accessory, Polygon notes.
You’ll be able to preorder the console starting July 15th if you’re a member of Amazon Prime, and North and South America will get the TurboGraf-16 Mini while select European countries will get the PC Engine Core Grafx Mini. Japan will get a slightly different version of the European one simply named the PC Engine Mini.

Donald Trump confirms that US companies will continue to sell their own technologies to Huawei

يوليو 08, 2019 0

US President Donald Trump has said he allows US companies to continue to deal with Huawei, in a clear concession after initial discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The US Department of Commerce listed Huawei blacklisted last month, meaning that US companies are not allowed to sell their components and technologies to the Chinese company without a license, although many companies have circumvented the ban in several ways. Trump's remarks come as Hu and Xi Jinping agreed to hold a trade truce during the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan on Friday.

"I've agreed to let our companies - as you know, jobs - and I like our companies to sell things to other people, so let it happen," the US president told a news conference at the G20 summit in Japan. This is very complicated and not easy - these are not easy things to do. "

"There are very few companies able to do this, but with a huge amount of money. Our companies were very upset, and these companies are big companies that we all know. But they were not quite happy about it. But we allow it because it was not relevant to national security. " As a result, Donald Trump has now allowed US companies to resume trading with US companies.

Donald Trump's comments appear to contradict the ban imposed by the US Department of Commerce, and refused to confirm that Huawei will be officially removed from the black list. Huawei will become a new topic at the end of the new trade talks with China. "Huawei is a complicated situation, we are finally allowing the company, and we will see where to go with the trade agreement," he said.

When pressed to answer whether Huawei would be removed from the blacklist, Donald Trump replied: "I do not want to talk about it now, we look at it very carefully. Huawei plays a big role in relation to our country and in terms of intelligence and intelligence community. We know a lot about Huawei, but do not want to mention it now, I just think it is inappropriate. We are not making it other than what I told you ... we will postpone this until later. "

Huawei has been banned by Washington on the basis of national security concerns, and the company is a tool to ease the trade dispute between China and the United States of America. Huawei previously said its blacklisting would hurt billions of consumers and deny it poses a threat to national security.

These rumored Pixel 4 XL renders show just how big its bezels will be

يوليو 08, 2019 0

Image: Google, re-stitched by @atn1988

It’s July, three months before we expect Google to fully unveil the Pixel 4. Like clockwork, the next scene in the phone rumor script has been performed: full 3D CAD renders of the upcoming phone. They come via Steve Hemmerstoffer — you know him as OnLeaks — who provided them to Pricebaba. Renders are generally not the most exciting kind of phone leak, especially after Google just tweeted out its own images, but there’s just a little extra information here: the dimensions of the Pixel 4 XL.
OnLeaks is reporting that the Pixel 4 XL will measure 160.4 x 75.2 x 8.2mm with a 6.25-inch display. By comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus measures 157.6 x 74.1 x 7.8mm with a 6.4-inch display. Assuming these specs are correct, that means that the S10 Plus is smaller across all three dimensions, despite having a larger screen. And since we’re expecting them to have approximately the same aspect ratios, the explanation for that difference is clear: bezels.
(Yes, I’m aware that in the weird world of phone specs in the US, we measure dimensions in millimeters and screen sizes by diagonal inches. I don’t make the rules or the rulers.)

Image: Pricebaba

I’ll leave it to others to calculate the precise screen-to-body ratio and the height of the top (“forehead”) and bottom (“chin”) bezels based on these renders, but suffice it to say that both will be larger than what’s on other recent Android phones like the S10 Plus, the OnePlus 7 Pro, and any number of others I could list here.
Those phones achieve those big screens sizes in (relatively) small bodies with clever (and expensive) manufacturing techniques and by finding a way to deal with the front-facing selfie camera. Some cut out the screen; others turn it into a pop-up camera from within the phone itself. The Pixel 4 isn’t going to go in for all that: it’s just going to unapologetically have a top bezel.

Well, since there seems to be some interest, 1 month after delivering your very first glimpse at the , here comes your very first full look at the ! 360° video + gorgeous 5K renders + dimensions, on behalf of my Friends @Pricebaba again -> https://pricebaba.com/blog/google-pixel-4-xl-5k-renders-360-degree-video-exclusive

109 people are talking about this
On the Pixel, the justification will likely be that it does some fancy things with all of that space: it gives you two selfie camera options, scans your face, and maybe even detects tiny hand gestures in space using Project Soli radar. There’s also likely to be another unspoken justification: you all hated the giant notch on the Pixel 3 XL so much, we just decided to make a bigger bezel instead. Besides, the Pixel line isn’t supposed to be about the most amazing hardware. It’s supposed to be about quality Google software.
Except a funny thing is happening with the Pixel line: the most hardcore Android users don’t seem to be as enamored of it as they once were. Some of that is the result of persistent RAM issues with the Pixel 3. Some of it is simply that it already feels like the Pixel 4 is a known quantity. Everybody’s expectation is in line with what you might guess: best-in-class cameras, meh hardware, good clean software, and hopefully no major issues. Months before the release, I’m already reading articles about how it’s disappointing. That’s wild!

5 reasons to use a VPN application for your smartphone

يوليو 06, 2019 0
VPN applications allow you to have privacy and security over the Internet. The most important part of a VPN service is the encryption it provides. A VPN program ensures that all data from your devices is securely encrypted, making it impossible for anyone to access.

VPNs hide your real location, and this is achieved by connecting to a VPN server at a remote site. As a result, you can access websites and services that are usually not available in your country. Let's get to know the top five reasons to use VPN on your phone ...

Privacy from your ISP
Internet service providers around the world keep records of what online participants do. Most of the time, these records are stored in order to comply with government laws. However, US service providers are allowed to store that data for sale to third parties. If you do not want your government and third parties, like advertisers, to know your web browsing habits - you should hide them using VPN.

Overflow restrictions
If you've ever visited a website to receive a notification that it is not available or that the site is blocked in your country, you'll understand the need for a VPN. The same goes for whether you've reached a YouTube video that was not available in your country. Internet service providers block many broadcast sites, file sharing sites, and other sites that the government has blacklisted.

Geographic restrictions include restricting certain websites and online services to certain countries, which means you can not always access everything you want to see. With VPN, you can pretend you're in any country. This allows you to bypass local restrictions or controls, and access country-specific content as well.

Access to content while traveling to second countries
When traveling abroad, it is possible to visit countries with strong control programs. In China, for example, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and many other services are blocked. With VPN, no matter where you go; you can always access this content.

In addition, geographical restrictions from your country of origin mean that you can not access online banking or other local services while you are abroad. However, using a VPN, you can easily pretend that you are in your home - and use the Internet as if you were in your home.

See more of the Netflix catalog
One of the most common reasons to obtain a VPN is to take advantage of the US Netflix catalog. Many countries have smaller catalogs and a wave for certain countries only, but with VPN anyone can easily pretend to be in the US to watch more of Netflix. The same applies to other services like Hulu, Amazon Prime, and HBO Go - VPN can allow you to unblock content from any service.

However, it is important to be aware that not every VPN provider is already blocking Netflix - so you should make sure that you review the expert directory and obtain the correct VPN.

Stay secure and protected on Wi-Fi
When you use public WiFi access points, open yourself to hacker attacks. Wired WiFi security can allow Internet criminals to intrude on your connection. This allows them to steal passwords, payment details, credit card data and other sensitive information.
VPN encryption completely encrypts your data, which means that regardless of the WiFi connection you decide to use - your data is always secure.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 will arrive on August 7

يوليو 03, 2019 0
Samsung Galaxy Note 10 launch and release date invitation poster
Samsung made it official: The company will announce the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 on August 7 in Brooklyn, New York. Samsung sent official invitations to media this evening. The company’s pro-grade flagship is expected to be the star of the event, which will take place at Barclay’s Center for the second year in a row.
The invitation provides us with two distinct clues that together form an exclamation point. The S Penstylus, long the Note series’ defining characteristic, is standing straight up above a camera lens.
“Samsung Electronics will unveil new devices designed to take the Galaxy ecosystem’s connectivity to the next level,” read part of the invitation.
The shape of the S Pen looks to be identical to that of last year’s Galaxy Note 9, though the coloring is different. The Note 9 featured lavender and yellow S Pens, depending on the color of the phone itself. The S Pen in the invitation is a glossy black.
The single camera is definitely a curiosity. Many expect the Galaxy Note 10 to adopt a triple- or even quadruple-camera design, as seen on the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus. Could the single lens refer to the selfie camera? Possibly.

Galaxy Note 10 takes shape

Thanks to a steady stream of leaks, we already have some information about the Note 10. The first renders appeared in early June and showed a device without a 3.5mm headphone jack (Boo). A second set of images revealed Samsung might also get rid of the dedicated Bixby button. Other rumors pointed to the possibility of cameras with multiple apertures.
The phone will almost certainly be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor.
SEE ALSO
More recent reports have introduced a cavalcade of data that may or may not be accurate. Some expect the phone to feature a new or refreshed design. Others note that the phone may come in two different sizes, including a Note 10 Pro variant. Yet others believe a 5G variant could be on deck. Then there’s the idea that it might come with a 5x optical zoom lens to better compete with the Huawei P30 Pro.
Some specs we can expect for sure. The phone will almost certainly be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, accompanied by 8GB or more of memory and 128GB or more of storage. The battery may rate as much as 4,500mAh. As for the screen, well who knows. The Note 9 already has one of the top displays on the market. Other than increase the refresh rate (to 90Hz or 120Hz), there’s not much Samsung can do to improve upon its astounding screen tech.
What do you want to see in the Galaxy Note 10? Be sure to sound off in the comments. As always, Android Authority will be on site at Barclay’s Center on August 7 to provide you with all the details.
The event will be live streamed from Samsung’s web site. Stay tuned.
